Vitamin F or Essential fatty acids

Never heard of vitamin F? Vitamin F is the essential fatty acids which are so crucial for our dog’s overall health. They are called essential fatty acids because our dog’s body cannot produce them and these have to be obtained through diet or supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids EPA, (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are necessary structural components of cell membranes.  These fatty acids help to maintain the cell membrane fluids that are needed for healthy functioning cells.  Omega- 3 fatty acids are also anti-inflammatory and research has shown that supplementing with omega-3 fish oils can reduce joint inflammation in dogs.  A lack of omega-3 in the diet may also cause dry flaky skin, constant itching and a dull coat. One of the best sources of omega-3 EPA and DHA is salmon or fish oils which can be added as a supplement to your dog’s meals.

Here is a simple blend of essential fatty acids which we add to our dog’s food daily: (recipe from Andi Brown, author of “The Whole Pet Diet”)

Essential fatty acids (EFA) blend

3 oz. or 1½ tablespoon wild salmon oil

1 oz. or ½ tablespoon cod liver oil

1 oz. or ½ tablespoon wheat germ oil

1 oz or ½ tablespoon organic flaxseed oil

1 oz or ½ tablespoon organic extra virgin olive oil

1 oz or ½ tablespoon organic coconut oil

¼ tsp dried organic rosemary

Mix the above oils and rosemary, store in a dark bottle and keep refrigerated for up to 2 months.  The recommended dosage is ½ tsp of the EFA blend for every 10 lbs (4.54 kg) of weight. We have been feeding the EFA blend to our dogs and notice a marked improvement in their skin and fur.

We also include fish such as salmon in our home cooked meals for dogs. Our homemade dog treats like Salmon Bites is a grain free treat that provides protein, vitamins, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. Our Chihuahuas absolutely love our latest creation, Scrumptious Salmon Bake,  a wholesome meal bursting with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins from the salmon and organic vegetables.  This amazing recipe has a sweet, soft consistency and is specially formulated for our senior dogs.

When we first tasted the Scrumptious Salmon Bake, we thought that this makes a fabulous recipe for humans too, even for non-fish lovers. It is simply yummy-licious, with the blend of gold sweet potatoes, grated organic carrots and apples lending a natural sweetness.  We even shared a loaf of the Scrumptious Salmon Bake with our doggies for dinner last night! Our homemade dog treats and meals are made from 100% human grade ingredients, with no added preservatives, salt or sugar. Check out our website www.pawsfurlife.com for more details.
